Here is my latest attempt at modeling coiled rope attached to a belaying
pin. I created a macro that allows me to control specific parameters such
as rope size, pigment darkness, number of turns, etc. The issue I had
before was that in photo's of real rigging, there are always big heaps of
messy coiled ropes & my previous attempts were just too clean. Combine the
desired messiness with the fact that not all ropes are the same size and
color & I just had to revisit this area of the model. I think this is much
better.

amazing work,...
even though on the second look the coils seems to penetrate each other
which would end up in an gordian knot :-)
I don't have a clue how to avoid this in a simple fashion.
Maybe you can get the extents of the allready existing coils and use
them as "forbidden volumes" while generating each coil after another.

Mind boggling. Fall of the coils looks very natural. Texture needs
tweaking maybe.

Thank you very much. :) The overlapping coils have been an issue and I have
tried several solutions. So far everytime I clean up the overlap, the
effect becomes too clean. I have tried a slightly different version of the
forbidden volumes idea. I may give your version a try though.

Thanks,

Tim

Thanks Jim,

THese are spere sweeps and unfortunately, I have not found a perfect
solution for applying a texture to the sweep. Still working on that part
though & thanks for your encouragement.

Actually I think your rope texture is fine. It does appear to be
suffering from a moire pattern though. Perhaps you could try rendering
without AA at a high resolution and then resizing down with Photoshop?
Extremely impressive work on this huge project, Tim.

It is amazing work indeed!! Very well done! The ropes look very real.
The interpenetration is not so severe, I believe, and may only really show
up on close scrutiny. In most scenes that wouldn't be the case.

I'm astonished at the ropes!
Your Niagara is like a carthusian work!

Astounding, mind boggling, wait... it is McMurdoing!
Do you give yourself a deadline or anything like?

The ropes are very convincing, I can feel their weight.
