I have been working on the media and container for the rain cloud. I realize
that the cloud itself is still hot tall enough, so I will work on tht more.
However, I think the rain column and the intersection of the rain column
and the cloud is coming along nicely.

All you great weather experts out there let me know how I am doing and where
improvements still need to be made.

I couldn't figure out how to attach 2 images to the same post, so here is
the second image. Both use the same settings, but different seeds for the
random numbers.

I like the first one better. The angle is nice. The rain, however, appears
to be falling straight down, still, even though the column is tilted. A
more massive thunderhead would look more probable, too. Still, my assesment
is: AWESOME.

I am struggling with making a density rotate. It appears to be eluding me so
far. I am still working on it so, I hope to have it figured out soon.

Don't tranformations work if you put them in the density block?
Beside that, they are light clouds for rain clouds,  and I think rain should
be darker (more absorption?) because rain drops don't scatter light as
clouds micro-drops do.

Not bad. I think you really need better media sampling parameters (increase
samples) because the cloud looks like a bunch of flat, partially transparent
layers of grey stuff. I'd comment on the rain, but I think more samples are
required before I can really make judgements on its appearance.

This picture of a raining cloud is disturbing. It reminds me of an infant in 
diapers loaded up with 'Terminator' style weaponry. Put another way the 
cloud is a newly formed, small fairweather cumulus - the rain emerging from 
it is a torrent from a much more developed cloud. That's the disconnect. 
Perhaps maturer harder edged clouds should be modelled for rain production? 
For a reality check there is a tremendous gallery of cloud images at

The most isolated cloud with rain I could find was at
http://www.thewarfields.com/img/CaribMonth/RainCloud.jpg
note that the rain is coming from the center fourth of the flat-bottomed 
cloud and is backed by some vertical mass

Neat.. :) Rain.. perhaps needs more work, but cloud is interesting IMHO,

What I am hearing loud and clear is that this cloud is just not big and mean
enough to produce this much rain. I agree ans will focus on this element as
well as improving the quality of the medias (thanks Slime).

I think I know where I am going wrong with my attempts to rotate the density
of the rain column. If I am correct, it is a pretty silly mistake & you
won't hear of it again.
