They look just a bit too shiny and clean. Add a normal. Or perhaps I'm
wrong. There aren't any ants of this variety here in Panama (AFAIK).

Awesome! The big ant looks kind of fake, and on all of them I think the back
body section is a tad smallish. Maybe there's slightly too much specular as
well. But this is the first insect scene I've looked at that's given me the
creeps. Nice Job! (code please?)

They look like a fatter version of some honeydew ants we have in
Florida. They are on the verge of being too fat. I also would drop the phong
a little.

these look cool. all that is missing is a picnic for them to raid!
like the others said, drop the highlight; but only a little. ants' are
really a bit shiny. you might try making them really really small. if
they still shine at that size, they are too shiny. if you can only see
the shine close up, then it's probably close to correct. i believe a
lot of bugs with exoskeletons excrete a kind of oil that coats them or
something. i could be wrong.

I will try to make the ant somewhat less fat. I'm not quite content with
the texture as well. But it's not quite easy to find the best
parameters.
Here's the main texture:
#declare T_Ant_Overall=
texture{
pigment{
gradient x
pigment_map{
[0 color rgb <.5,.18,.2>]
[0.2 color rgb <.5,.18,.2>]
[0.65 color rgb <.15,.1,.12>*1 ]
[1 color rgb <.15,.1,.12>*1] }
scale 6
translate <-3,0,0>
}
finish{diffuse 0.5
brilliance 1
specular 1
roughness 0.02
reflection .1
ambient 0}
normal{bumps .1}
}
There are some special normals on the different parts of the body.
I'll submit the source code to the POV-Ray Objects Collection once I
have cleaned up the code.
BTW: I have posted a little animation at binaries.animations.

well i think ants are "longer", so to speak. These look more like bugs (in
general!), but really great bugs nonetheless! =)

I think these look good, as Bill says a tad too fat, and as others
have said a bit too shiny. Also I think that the bodies are too
close to the ground, it's asthough they've got those long legs and
just drag themselves along, I'm sure that ants that I see here at
home (UK), hold their bodies much higher off the floor.

I think to have them looking a bit more realistic, you need to scatter a
load of hairs over the surface of their body, but this varies from
species to species.
Also, to my eyes, they look a bit on the robust side. Try making them a
little more gracile and slender. At the moment, they're looking more
like beetles than ants in terms of the slightly stumpy feel they seem to
have.
But then again, since we're talking POV here, and I've never seen the
point in going for excessive photorealism in POV (if you want
photorealism, use a camera :), they are very nice.
Bye for now,
Jamie.
