I wondered that too. When I read the books I imagined that area of space
being dark too. I don't recall there being a glowing nebula.

Maybe it's the background radiation, just like our microwave background,
but still in the visible range.

In the show the "walls" of the ring zone glow in blue and yellow and
illuminate the ships inside.

But I added an extra light source to give the ship more contrast.
Attached is a new version with only diffuse light from the walls.

Aaaah! Much better! Like in the example, you can vary the diffused light
over ring space (I would suggest a hdri map *) and add a few lights
on/in the ship itself.

* easy to make: just draw an appropriate image map and save it in hdr
format. There are several paint or converting programs that can do that.

Or make one in POV-Ray and save directly as .HDR or .EXR.

In this case, a cylindrical mapping looks like it's the way to go. Just
map on a vertical cylinder cantered around the Y axis, then, rotate it
as needed.

Updates, updates ... camera position, different light setup. I like this
one quite a bit better now.

Agree, this one my favorite of those posted.

Is the blue inside the ring intended or due pattern/media clipping of
some sort?

Season 5 finale this coming Wednesday! :-)

It's intentional, a protomolecule torus that powers and controls the thing.

A feature that I have not tried yet. Seems to be time to do!
