I'd love to finish this scene. Unfortunately, I can't get POV to
cooperate. It parses fine but keeps crashing part-way through the
render with an "access violation".

Poor povray. He hitted you hard, didn't he?
are you sure this is just half of the image? Looks pretty complete and
beautiful to me...

Nice, looks pretty complete though ;)
Did you try rendering in segments using +sc +sr +ec +er?

Really nice scene. specially the perspective towards the coast.
When/where does it crash in the image? Part renders may give some
indication.
Something troubles me with this river meandering through the landscape. It
seems to go uphill in some places, but maybe that is an illusion. Looks to
steep too in places, without rapids. Difficult to get this aspect correctly,
I know...

Thanks Thomas.

Well, what you see here rendered entirely; it's when I started adding
what was intended to be the main focus of the scene that the trouble
began. But, you would think that it would then crash when it was
actually rendering that which was added, but it doesn't. It doesn't
stop in the same place every time, either, and I can't see any pattern
in it. I'm baffled.

It may, in fact, flow upwards a bit. :) Like I said, rivers are tough!
In fact, if you saw the river close enough, you would see that its
surface is remarkably convex at points and concave at others.

Yeah... I saw that too. Up to now, I have not really attempted rivers in a
landscape because I saw the problems to get it right.... I shall have to do
something about this soon, though.

I have had some issues with POV crashing with access violations. I found that
closing all other Apps usually prevents this from happening. Also, I have found
3.7 to be a bit more stable (and quicker).
