Well, what you see here rendered entirely; it's when I started adding 
what was intended to be the main focus of the scene that the trouble 
began.  But, you would think that it would then crash when it was 
actually rendering that which was added, but it doesn't.  It doesn't 
stop in the same place every time, either, and I can't see any pattern 
in it.  I'm baffled.

It may, in fact, flow upwards a bit. :)  Like I said, rivers are tough! 
  In fact, if you saw the river close enough, you would see that its 
surface is remarkably convex at points and concave at others.
