Hi,

I thought I'd share with you another old scene of mine that I recently improved.
It's entitled Time For Light Reflection and features amongst others a checkered
plane and a mirrored sphere... No, no, don't go. There's a twist.

Once again, it's a single render, without any postprocessing used to achieve the
illusion, and without any no_shadow, no_image or no_reflection tricks. Okay,
admittedly, I have used a few tricks, but all obey the laws of physics.

Given the time, I should probably improve the candle a bit. I think it is a bit
too plain compared to the other objects. However, I am currently working on a
new scene, which has priority, and on top of that I have enough other stuff to
get on with. So for now, this will have to do.

Comments and suggestions are welcome of course.

Cheers,

Erwin

Yeah! Excellent! This is a trick I have been planning to do for a scene of
mine which is on permanent wip, so to say. However, the twist you gave it is
clever and goes one step further than what I had intended to do. Very well
done.

Is Ctulhu coming out of the mirror?

The illusion effect is nice and I like the old-school raytracing look
and thematic. (why was everyone so obsessed with spheres, checkered
patterns, candles and hourglasses?)

Yeah, and all the more surprising as the technical tools to model good candles
were still at lack... :P

Ah well, maybe POV candles will experience a revival soon ;)

Thanks for the kind words. It's good to hear that I am not the only one who
likes this image ;-)

Actually, what you see is the tail of a (table-sized) dragon that has just
entered the mirror. It's looking down the edge of the checkered plane in the
mirror world (wondering where to go next?). Admittedly, this is a bit hard to
make out, especially at this resolution.

In an earlier version of the image, the dragon's feet did not actually touch the
ground, and one of its feet was squashing the mirrored glasses. It was only when
I rendered the scene at a high resolution that I discovered these modelling
mistakes...

Ever considered creating a good dragon skin texture for it?

Not really. I am quite happy with this strange-looking, fantasy-like, green
texture with pink spots. It gives the small dragon a cute and innocent
appearance, which suits its character. It won't harm anyone. It's just an
inquisitive yet shy little creature. Also, it doesn't really have a need for
camouflage colors, as it can always hide on "the other side" as long as it does
not stray too far from a mirror when it's on "our side" of the world :-).

Nevertheless, if you have particular suggestions for improvement, or if you
simply don't think that it is clear from the image that this is the tail of a
small dragon, let me know.

Cheers,
Erwin
