Heh, thanks Sam. I think I struck lucky with the diamonds. ;) Not so sure
about them in the next image though.
I'm guessing the leaves

You would be right to be doubtful, they're all Wings models.

Hmm, I didn't have brilliance in the statement with those first two
images, but I've tried it in the next image. Here's what I've used:
T_Gold_2A
finish{
diffuse 0.3
ambient 0.0
specular 0.6
brilliance .5
phong .5
reflection .5
conserve_energy}}
I'm not sure if it has made a difference or not, but what else could I
change or add?

Well, I hope I can make them! :) These might be going in a catalogue
soon. (I'd made the mistake of showing the bossman one of my printed
renders, and he thinks it's a photograph, so he wants me to design something
for the catalogue). I designed the earrings about two years ago, and the
cross and brooch are new designs. The idea is to have sprinklings of
diamonds on the new designs. Yes, I can make them. :o)
It would be *very* cool to make my own

All you need is a 3' x 2' bench in a 6' space, some hand tools, propane,
and you're away.
(especially since we can find our own gold up here in the Gold

Lucky you! Send some my way! :o)

Now with a brooch, or, as some of you might call it, a pin. With this image
I cranked it up and used +a0.0 +am2, and it took 6.5 hours! The first two
images took just 30 mins. each with standard AA.

If it's that easy then why isn't everyone doing it :-)
I think that you forgot to mention talent and the ability to work with your
hands. Both of which you have.

He does take commissions so be careful what you wish for :-)
Steve designed and made a fantastic opal ring for my wife, which she loves.

Actually, I think everyone IS doing it! Too many designers out there now
that the internet is available. It's a good challenge though. :o)

What I had not seen earlier, is that you seem to have used a (subdued)
celtic pattern as a basis, haven't you? In the brooch it shows more.
Excellent work, btw. You are a multi-talented fellow Steve.
Thomas

Yes Thomas! :o) In the earrings, it's a very easy and subtle
'over-and-under' pattern signfying the celtic style. Of course, the 'Tree of
Life' was also prevelant back then, apparently. ;)
> In the brooch it shows more.
Did you notice that the brooch is the earring design doubled-up? I'm sure
you did. Getting that celtic knot (known as a 'Josephine knot'*) in the
middle is just the top loops of the earrings interlaced with eachother - I
raised some loop-edges, and lowered some others.
> Excellent work, btw. You are a multi-talented fellow Steve.
Dang! You keep blushing, and now I am... Thank you.
~Steve~
* It was only about 7 years ago that I learnt this name for this pattern,
even though I'd used the pattern fairly extensively in my jewellery designs.
The name, and the pattern, has significant meaning for me - my mother's name
was Josephine, and that's also my daughters name too...

Alright, I have probably spent too much time with this, when I should
have been finishing a tutorial. I *had* to make a cool object to show
the gold texture, after all :)
I don't really know how good it is, and you may need to change the gold
color (I'm slightly [very slightly] color-blind). Here it is:
#declare golden = <1.0, 0.8, 0.4>;
pigment{rgb golden}
finish{
diffuse 0.3
ambient 0.0
specular 1
brilliance 2
reflection{golden/2 metallic 1}
metallic 1
}
normal{
granite scale .025 poly_wave 0.5
accuracy 0.1 bump_size -0.25
}
That surface normal is there just to give it a little extra something.
Notice the "metallic" keywords. I don't think they were part of the
POV-Ray syntax long ago, but it's good to have them now. You can also
reflect a color vector instead of just a float.
It may be an improvement, it may not be. It's all subjective.

Well, It's hard work finding the gold, and I haven't found too much. I'm
not out there every day though, panning the creeks and traversing
treacherous mines. I live too far up the hill, and all the placer
deposits seem to occur below 1500-200 feet elevation. I live at 4500'+.
