I've played around with HDR and MLPov, and after recently looking at some
bottle photography, I decided to make my own bottle. Well, I learned a lot.
And, I now have a lot of new questions as well. :-)

I tried photons, but when used in combination with a high max_trace_level
(I'm think), they took FOREVER to render and sucked up a ton of memory, so I
killed the idea. If anyone has any tips in that department, I would greatly
appreciate it.

I used a lathe object (cubic_spline) for the bottle. It actually has a
hollow interior, and the glass actually has thickness. I don't know if
that's the approach that most people take. Anyway, even with
max_trace_level set to 256 (the max), POV still reports that it traced
256/256. Is there something I did wrong, or is that just the way it works?
For this image, it was set to 50.

I'm sure a lot of others have had lots of experience with glass objects, so
again, any advice would be appreciated.

Looks good. Check your adc_bailout setting. I vaguely remember some comment
about adc_bailout not working properly with release 3.5 so you might want
to try POV-Ray 3.6.

I think what is happening with an object like this is that you can end up
with rays which bounce around inside the object especially in the planes
intersecting the light source(s) and camera locations. For most images I
think you can get away with much lower settings for the max_trace_level
even when glass is involved. I usually set max_trace_level a count or two
above the number of surfaces through which rays must pass in a scene. For
your bottle I would try a setting of 6 and only increase it if the image
color looks wrong or if black patches appear.

Your bottle does look very good. I looked a trying to imitate glass some
time ago and wasn't ever very happy with how mine turned out until I
realized that the models I was looking at weren't 'perfect'. So I used
spatch and modeled a bottle and then threw in a little noise to make it look
a little interesting. It still needs work, but attached is where I left
off.

Wow, those look very nice!

I'd prefer not to use a 3rd party tool, but I also wonder if they render
faster that way. Lathe objects are not exactly fast to render.

Here's another picture I did, different color bottle, using photons, with a
slight normal applied to the glass (tiny bumps stretched along x,z). The
wood could be better, but it's just there for a surface.

Unfortunately, I'm using MLPov (based on 3.5) for the HDRI. :-(
However, I'm planning on doing a few experiments with bottles using
different lighting. Suddenly, I have a bottle interest spawned by a recent
photography book I bought.

I did a few renders at various settings. It seems to look just fine with
max_trace_level at 10, actually.

Impressive...

(Is the background an image? Or is it something POV-Ray made?)

I'm definitely liking that wood texture... and the bottle itself (the
lighting especially) is lovely.

It's the "Kitchen Probe" HDR image (courtesy of MLPov).

> I'm definitely liking that wood texture...

It's one of the wood textures from one of the radios, in "Radio Graves".
It's nice to be able to reuse things. :-)

I can't take much credit for the lighting, since the HDRI does much of it
for me. :-)

Reduce max_trace_level as much as you can, then add your photons.

Maybe not the way that "most" peoples use, but the way to do it if you
want a realistic bottle. Doing otherwize make the bottle look like a
buble...

It's caused by total internal reflections doing circles around the bottle.
