This is a simple render of a chess board I'm working on. It's supposed
to be electronic and the pieces are holographic. I also included a
sketch of what it should look like when it's done (since it's no where
near that yet :P) I didn't make the pieces, they are lathe objects I
found by Knut Arlid Estrad.

Any comments or suggestions?

I highly recommend using emission media to give a projected look, and making
the chess pieces "hover" a bit above the board. If you play with the
samples and aa values for method 3 media, you could even acheive a staticy
effect.
Scattering medias could be used to show that the pieces are projected
from a source, maybe make the white squares glow, and so on...
Just a few quick ideas.

Thanks, I already am using emmission media, but I couldn't get it too
visible without making the pieces farily opaque, but I'm still working
(this is the first time I have used media) Thanks for your suggestions :D

When using emission media, the objects should be transparent or translucent
and hollow.
From your remarks it sounded like your success had been limited. If you
would post a code snipet, I might be able to advise you better, but "better"
largely depends on what sort of look you want to achieve. I had meant using
media to represent the object by itself, and not have a visible "shell" at
all...

very nice. If you stick with the same transparency, it might be worth
"dulling" the reflection on the board itself, as this , although "right"
confuses the image of the chess pieces.

Ok, I figured out using media a little better. (I just made them almost
completely opaque to hide my terrible use of media in the first post)
For now I am just using a completely clear pigment and 'hollow on' with
'absorbtion <3.7,4.0,4.0>' for the black pieces and 'emission
<3.0,3.0,3.3>' for the whites. I tried changing other options in the
media, but took them out cause I had no idea what I was doing :P. I am
fairly satisfied with this look, at least enough to wait until I finish
modelling the rest to tweak it more. I attached what I have now.
