I highly recommend using emission media to give a projected look, and making
the chess pieces "hover" a bit above the board.  If you play with the
samples and aa values for method 3 media, you could even acheive a staticy
effect.
  Scattering medias could be used to show that the pieces are projected
from a source, maybe make the white squares glow, and so on...
Just a few quick ideas.
