Cool! Oak trees tend to have less branches, though. I've got a big twisty
one outside in my (er, the) backyard and the trunk is /right on/.

Hmmm... You are right. It sure looked right in my head, but this morning,
I looked at a bunch and realized that they do have quite a few less
branches. That's actually good, cuz now it'll render faster! ;-)

I'll have to update the one on my site.

Short answer: Yes.

Long answer: that's just the way TomTree/PovTree works. You can set up all
of the leaf parameters, and then simply set the number of leaves to "0" if
you want to turn them off. That can be done either in PovTree or in your
POV-Ray source code.

Thanks for that observation (which a couple of you made). Isn't it strange
how something can look so perfect in your own mind, and then whey you
compare it to the real world, you find that you were way off? At least I've
done that quite a bit. It makes me question my perceptions. In my mind,
trees have a lot more branches than they really do. *sigh*

Here we go. A couple more attempts, with fewer branches. I also changed a
few other settings to hopefully make it a little better. One with leaves*,
one without.

*No, they're not oak leaves. Get a life, people! ;-)

Good job!
I believe you know that it's possible to make any leaf
by selecting 'Use UV Mapping' and providing image map name.
Image map should support transparency (e.g. PNG). Real object
used for such leaf is a mesh consisting of two triangles.
You can scale it specifying parameters on the same 'Foliage'
tab.

In the future I'm going to implement Leaf Modeller in POV-Tree.
It will be something like lofter which you can find in many
3D apps. Using splines you will define path and profiles.
Resulting surface will be converted into mesh.

Gena.

looks like a youngish live oak. I'm not sure of the capabilities of
TomTree, but live oaks have more consistency in the size of the larger
branches, the largest of which are much thicker in proportion to the
trunk.

Actually, what I was shooting for was an old White Oak. From the pictures
that I found on the Web, white oaks around here in Michigan grow differently
from further south, though. I think I've created a reasonable
approximation, but it's certainly not perfect. I wasn't able to get the
twigs short enough. Older tress have shorter "snaggier" twigs, as much of
their growth is behind them, I guess. I couldn't figure out how to do that
in POV-Tree, but that doesn't mean that it's not possible. As a result,
this tree also kind of looks like an old Sugar Maple, except that the bark
is too dark for that.

I would guesstimate the age of this "oak" to be about 80 to 100 years. Not
particularly old.

IMHO, POV-Tree + TomTree is a killer combination. Without POV-Tree, TomTree
overwhelmed me. Now I can actually get a grasp on the parameters.
