Some distant hills added in the background and a bit more contrast in
the sky. Not sure it's a big improvement. I'd like to make the distant
hills look more sunny, but I've not been able to figure out what is
needed to achieve that.

Sigh... Not again. It has just been down for three days a few days ago,
and now already again. There's not much I can do about it unfortunately.
Try again tomorrow or in a few days time.

The hills in the background give a better idea that
the egg is standing. About the sunlight on the distant
hills: Perhaps you should pick a different position
for the sun, even if you have to create lightgroups
to disconnect the lighting from background
and foreground. As long as the two suns don't
oppose, it shouldn't be obvious.

It could help to lower the ambience values for the
hills, so that their shadows are really dark.
And sometimes some very little specular highlights
do wonders!

I'm wondering though if the graininess of the image
is intended or a side-effect of the compression?

I'll try that.

They already have ambient 0. I even tried with negative ambient values,
but it didn't help any. It just looked odd.

I'll have to experiment with that.

It's intended.

Thanks for the feedback!

Nice work rune

For some reason I find this scene a little disturbing (which appeals to my
taste)

One addition I would suggest is a disturbed tree (all pointy and menacing)
dunno why just feel it would fit the mood.

I dont know if you are basing this scene on the Golden Ratio but it does
seem a little evident... just wondered.

I feel a Zazzle picture coming on ;)

I see your point, but it wouldn't fit with my symbolic idea with this
image. The world outside the egg is supposed to be good, bright and
without limits, as opposed to the confinement of the egg. In the newer
version I have posted, this is more apparent, with the sunnier hills and
the addition of the birds.

Not really, just trusting my intuitive eye for image composition... ;)

Dunno... Maybe. :)

I like it, it reminds me of a similar illustration I saw for a science
fiction story many many moons ago in Omni Magazine, but it is so far back in
time that it eludes me.
