Interesting idea! I might do that but I did kinda wanna animate the hands
spinning :)

Is that because you can't figure out where your control points / nodes
should be?

Would a visual tool that created 2D splines for use in lathes, sors, prisms
be helpful? I am in the progress of playing around with such a tool, written
in VB, but am not sure if there would be much interest besides my own sense
of accomplishment.

not really. I just the route work. Its the boring part of POV to me.
And there is no preview short of low quality renders so It takes a lil
while to fix mistakes

That'd be awesome. I'm use to dealing with bezier curves in PS. If it could
speed up the process of making them!

draped over the tables and chares and stuff
what was it called
but that looks like it could be meshawarped or somehting to give a bendy 
clock draped effect

You must mean Salvidor Dali's Persistance of time. It would be cool to do
that with this pic, but first I have to finish the watch :)

try differencing out random objects (slow, but effective).

Would this method work? (the glass is an isosurface i.e. 3.5 or port to
MegaPov, the frame is CSG)
It took about 2.5 minutes to render (without optimized max_gradient) using
photons and radiosity.  It's usually under 1 minute.

Thats similar to what I want but I'm having good luck so far with my HF. I
have a lot more control over it than I would with the isosurface (in the
sense that I know my way around photoshop but isosurface math is a bit over
my head :)

I'll post my results soon.

I've made quite a number of watches myself.  Take a look at this address:

I haven't made any with broken glass to speak of.  One pocket watch was made
with a single crack in it though.
Hands are usually pretty easy to me.  I usually construct them out of
primitives (cylinders, triangles, etc.)
