I used the model in "brilliant.inc" by Jerome Grimbert (posted here about a
year ago).
Rock22.bmp and Rock38.bmp are static images (yes, just plain black
rectangles).
Spin22.bmp and Spin38.bmp are the small and large "busy" animations.
Given the size of the images I don't see photons happening anytime soon, but
if somebody else posts a new and improved version I will be happy to give it
a try :-)

Reminds me of a question- I located the windows shutdown screen and
"safe to turn off" screen in Win'98, but can't find the startup splash logo
file... anybody know where it's squirreled away?

In Win95 it was in logo.sys in the root of the boot drive. (e.g.
C:\logo.sys)
Might have changed in 98.

Strange. I am pretty sure that the filename is still logo.sys Most likely a
hidden file. Try dir /ah in the dos box in the root of your boot drive.
Additionally I remember something that Win98 is able to use some "backup" if
it fails to find logo.sys in the root. Have you tried to place your BMP
there, named logo.sys?

I did a search through all files, hidden and otherwise with no luck.
Nothing for logo.sys anywhere. I will try putting it in the C://Windows
directory and see if it does any good.

Just for those who haven't taken this walk, two of the three "splash" or
logo files are in C://Windows and named "logow.sys" and "logos.sys". The
logow file is the "Windows is now shutting down..." file, and the logos file
is the "it is now safe to turn off your computer" file. That one is almost
never seen if your computer shuts itself down, so there is little joy in
changing it.
The format is simple- although they are "sys" files in extension, they
are in fact BMP images. The format is simple- width 320, height 400, stored
as 8 bit optimized color. The files will be 127K in size on the windows
directory listing, the actual sizes are 129,080 bytes each.
Create your artwork in POVray or whatever in a 640x400 format (which I
added to my quick render settings) and once done, resample it to 320x400.
That's pretty easy to do in most art programs, or you can actually set
POVray to do it, I am sure.
Once done, save in that 8 bit BMP format and copy to the proper
directory. Using the DOS prompt, rename the original "logow.sys" file to
something like "logow.bak" and leave it alone. Then rename your bitmap
image to "logow.sys" also in DOS to get the file extensions right.
Then, when you shut down your machine, you will see your little artwork
instead of the typical stuff.
