I have added a few items- I still need to get the box around the control
panel, add an oscilloscope on a roll-around cart, some conduits to the
walls, a little dirt. Overall, it is starting to look pretty good. Well,
IMHO. Comments and criticisms welcome.

Cheers!

Indeed!

Just two things:

1.) the green light of the control on the top of the torus is IMO too
bright. It floodes the hole room.
2.) move the torus slightly up so that is is not lower than the base. just
my opinion.

however, I like the media glow :)

Correct. My mistake.

Okay, I have added a few items, such as a sign, some conduits, etc. I
still have to do some obvious things, but life sometimes intrudes on the
virtual world, sigh. Of note is the fact that even at 1280x1024 resolution
with AA on, this image renders in less than 8 minutes on my Pentium 1.2GHz
machine.

Cheers!

The shadows look too sharp, like they are from light shining through the
wormhole instead of light from the wormhole. For something like this,
radiosity might be best. And maybe a media glow around the
electrodes/coils surrounding the wormhole.
That should also help take care of your rendering speed problem... ;-)

Also, the texturing looks kind of flat...I suggest using ambient 0 on
anything that isn't supposed to glow, and putting a fill light at the
camera position. This way, shadows are lit, but you still get shading.
And maybe some more dirt, but this looks like it might be a laboratory
clean-room environment.

Yeah, good point about the lighting- I think I will save that dragon for
last, so I can still get reasonable speeds as I continue to add details.
And texturing is still in the formative stage; I find that if I get my
objects made first, then I can tweak the include files and make them nicer
once I have the environment together. Maybe that's sort of backwards, but
it works for me. Adding the conduits helped a lot, and next will be some
big electrical boxes, etc. Maybe throw in a fire extinguisher, just for
verisimilitude.
The keypad buttons turned out to be very simple- superellipsoid with the
top shallowly trimmed by a large sphere. In fact, this is all CSG with no
lathes, SORs, or anything more complex than the superellipsoids. The
toughest thing so far was getting the conduit to look right. That dull
metal look was elusive under this lighting for some reason, but very
informative as a learning experience.
The keypad displays turned out to be simple- dark red with
transmittance, of course, and the displays are just text objects with a high
ambient value.
Thanks to everyone who has made useful comments so far; I will continue
to develop this into something significant (translate: pretty).

Cheers!

To my eye, this picture is improved in every way. The look is much more
dramatic. My only suggestion besides the further addition of details (which
you already have planned), is to put some kind of connectors where the coils
meet the rim or perhaps just a holes in the rim where the coils would appear
to be entering.
