Done and done- here is the new rendition.

Cheers!

OK, I'm happy :)
I notice one of my hi output leds has the flat across the pins, not
against the cathode. Not sure why. Its the only one I've seen like
that.

May I ask a dumb question? (if not, please don't read on). Ok, why are you
having problems with getting the interior image to cast shadows? I can't see
the problem in that. Aside that, I always loved leds and my own attempt to
model them wasn't good. But these will be quite realistic! The textures just
need to be better and I look forward to see their light turn on.

Hugo

I just didn't put the caustics on because I was trying to get the bugs
out before doing the long render. I'll turn them on and do it over if you
want. At first, I wasn't sure how to do it, but I know now- it just helps
to take the time hungry steps out until the final render, of course.

Cheers!

Well, excuse my red face- the caustics are pretty fast- but they don't
look that good. I guess I'll do the photon thing next.

Cheers!

Here is the photon render. Not bad. It ran in about 65 seconds.

Cheers!

65 seconds is pretty fast. But I think the shadows now look like they're
being cast from an opague object, and have you tried photons_off for the
glass? I'm not sure the look is quite right. Maybe it's because real leds
are made of plastic (of some sort) and not glass. For the realism I suppose
you will adjust that too.

Absolutely- still tinkering, of course.

Cheers!

That's pretty much what you will see in real life. Most of the light is
refracted away from the shadow, leaving it dark. It spreads out after
being focused inward, and is barely visible when the LED is far enough
from the surface the shadow is cast on.

They don't look much like glass to me, they look pretty much like the
plastic that is used in real LEDs.

I started a similar collection a little while ago, and I've posted my
(un-polished, incomplete) work in p.b.s-f
