Working on a scene, raining, but in a dry, arid place. I plan on adding a
central object to the scene soon, way off into the distance, as soon as I
get the shape and texture right. Any comments/criticism (of the
constructive variety only, please) welcome.

It looks nice - you're doing well, but the helmet appears to be floating.
I'm assuming that it's not but that there's no visible shadow. Is there no
light source or is it behind the camera. IMO it should be directly up (or
where the sun is), and possibly an area light to create a shadow. What have
you got in mind for the main object?

I'm still working on the lighting, right now my lights (2 point lights) are
shadowless. I originally envisioned the helmet and spear in the foreground,
with three large crosses in the distance, as a post-crucifixion tableau.
The crosses will be on a low hill, with a cobble-stone type road leading
from the camera position up to the hill. Can't quite get the cross
size/distance from the camera/texture to look right yet, but I'm making
progress:-) Thanks.

I understand you're use of shadowless lights however unfortunately they
create the feeling that the helmet is just floating in mid air. Even on the
cloudiest of days there would be a shadow under any object, especially an
object like that helmet. Perhaps you could use radiosity here?

I would probably think about radiosity, both the plants and the helmet
don't seem to have shadows and they should of course.

The rain looks good, although you would probably expect some water on the
ground, also in dry regions, the water does not tend to seep away
immediately during such a heavy rain.
