A touch of focal blur pushed the render time up to 12 hrs for this one. Just
experimenting really, hence the lighting leaves a bit to be desired, and the
object placement could be better. Anyhow, I liked the media effects, and the
two-part fractal.

The materials in that scene work really well. How did you build the four white
and gold objects at the top of the image? Are they isosurfaces? They're very
interesting. You're right about the lighting, it's good but you could do a lot
more with it. Maybe turn on radiosity and photons, to get some nice caustics,
and use an area light instead. On the whole a very nice image.

I've always wanted to try to create an abstract image using POV, but I never
quite seem to be able to get far enough from reality! Nice one.

Thanks

Simple CSG actually:

intersection {
torus { 2,0.5 rotate x*-90 translate <0,-1,0>}
torus { 1,0.5 rotate x*-90 translate <0,0.95,0>}
}

Never considered radiosity actually, but I forgot to try photons. I'm going
to experiment further with the scene... I feel it can be improved upon lots.

Thanks.

I'm the opposite way.. abstract stuff comes really easily to me.. it's
'real-world' stuff that I have neither the patience nor the inclination to
model.

Thanks for your comments,

Andy

Really? Wow, thanks. I just wish I had your computer rather than my ancient
P200. Maybe this year I'll be able to upgrade.

All the best,

Andy

I don't know, except for the cubes with the torii, the rest looks peculiarly
awesome, like something out of Myst.

BTW, I'm actually just building my new machine today. I'm about to shut down
to move this old machine to my parents' room. :)

what is that sponge-like texture?

That's cute. Sometime I ought to experiment with variations on this,
particularly with different rotations.

Here's a picture without the fancy texture, to make the shape more
visible.

Yeah.  That looks great!
I was immediately struck by that texture, too.

Sponge-Like texture below:

#declare Sponge =
material {texture { pigment { rgbf 1 }}
interior {
     media {
       scattering { 1,10 extinction 1.75}
       method 1
       samples 5, 10
          density {
            crackle solid  scale 0.1
            density_map {[0 rgb 0][0.5 rgb 0][0.5 rgb 1][1 rgb 1]}
              }
            }
        media { emission <1,.6,0>}
              }
   }
}
