I've never had any problem with them, and use them fairly often, but I
usually reverse things from what you showed:
rotate -z*27
My first thought is that it must be something to do with promoting the
float value of 27 to a vector before multiplying by z, but the error
message seems to indicate it messes up before then...and as far as I
know, that section of the code hasn't been messed with, except for
adding a ^ operator, and it works in other cases...

BTW, what is the ior of oil? And it might be nice to have the light
coming from the other direction, so the caustics aren't hidden by the
bottle as much.

yes that works fine as far as I know, however

it should curve more, but I was banking on the bottles refraction to hide it
:)
label, thought about it, but didn't want to hide the refractions

its exactly the same as the 3 year old bottle we have here - don't use it
much, but it was a nice shape to try next after the mug

I have no idea, used 1.33 (water) as it looked nice.
the best caustics are in the bottles shadow, which i think helped to
highligt them, i did quickly try a couple of other lighting arangements, but
liked this best.

I tried exactly the same in megapov 0.7 and had no problems, same in 0.6a.

Hmm, could this be a platform/download thing? Have you tried redownloading
and installing it? It could simply be something broke in the transfer.

Well, I don't know if this is any help or not, but 1,2,3 Propan-triol
(also known as Glycerol) has the same IOR at 20 degrees C as borosilicate
glass. Unfortunately I don't know any numbers off the top of my head.
OK, scratch that, apparently olive oil has an IOR of 1.47, as according
to :
http://oldsci.eiu.edu/physics/DDavis/3050/Ch16R&R/Intrnl.html
You know, sometimes I really like Google...
Bye for now,
Jamie.
