I've been working on my University Portfolio for entry pretty much non-stop
and seem to have hit a slight block. The included image is a christmas
style house [stops to watch fireworks out of window] in production. The
image will be finished soon (snow is great means I don't need to produce the
roof tiles), but it still feels a little bare. Any christmas style
suggestions - I would like to have this image finished for Christmas. I've
got christmas lights in production but they use media and its real slow,
glows are a possibility but I'm using Moray for the whole lot (I've already
had to increase available memory for Moray because of the amount of bricks).

In short comments pls - improvements and especially suggestions

Thanks

I think the foreground is pretty much OK, unless you feel like adding a
snowman. What it really needs (IMO) is a background.

You might want to play with some small glows using the plugin to simulate
fairy lights, also try putting some detail into the first floor.

Oh, and change the background colour to black, I did a quick check in
Photoshop, and it makes the scene look slightly less empty.

Well, you asked :)

Bye for now,
     Jamie.

Icicles, shoveled driveway, heaps of snow, Christmas lights, roof ornaments,
manger scene...

Thanks, I've been looking into the glow plugin for Moray, I gave Keith Hull
an e-mail and am awaiting a response, otherwise I'll have a go at a udo
myself. I think glows will really improve the scene (I've just implemented
the christmas lights w/media and its just ballooned my rendering time). I'm
still thinking about the background, possibly a sexy heightfield (Austria
style) and/or snow precipitating and/or fog, who knows.

Thanks again

Individual bricks? Can't they be done with texturing?

Thats in an interesting point. I started off with the base of the house
then in detail I started with the Chinmey. I found that using texturing
instead of individual bricks limited me extensively. It would mean that I
have textures running over all the bricks that are similar and didn't really
define the structure. Having individual bricks means I can individually
texture bricks (from the drawing in the paper selling houses some are grey
and some are v. dark grey).

There may be a way to texture 'nice bricks' but I thought this would be the
easiest (81000 edges and 62000 vertices)

Upstarts needs windows, but you know that. A stary sky waoud
be nice, asthough the whole thing's lit by the moon.

Nice work so far, I'd better do a scene of our house before we
move, and I havn't got long now.
