First time posting an image. This is a scene from a photo I took last
summer. It shows a Lake Erie fishing tug. This particular tug was
captained by my grandfather and is pictured where she is docked in Port
Dover, Canada, undergoing refurbishing.
I am looking for suggestions on how to improve this image. One other
thing. With the exception of media clouds and the skysphere this image
is hand modeled entirely from bicubic patches.

You've got my interest piqued, where's the image?

man that is cool.
is the boat detailed out or is it just a rough model?
I think it's great! I don't see models like this very often at all.
the background stuff could use a lot more detail and there could be a
grunge applied to everything, but it's a great scene.
awesome, I look forward to seeing more of this.

I was working from a photo so the hull underwater is just guessed at, also I
need to model the stern in more detail, but they largely left open, as shown
in my model, on these tugs, as that is where much of the work hauling and
laying nets takes place. But the doors and ports on the far side at there as
well as the ports in the back of the wheelhouse.
The scene also was rendered with radiosity, is the lighting believable?

Yes, really there is a whole yard of tugs docked in the background
Thanks again

Yay! Nice! The boat is pretty dark, but I suppose a photo of the real
thing would look similar with the sun behind like that. I can only
recommend that you tilt the camera up a bit, so that the horizon is
about 1/3 up from the bottom.

Not bad. But you need photons and/or caustics.

Wow, that's beautiful! What's your secret for the sky, including the sun and
clouds? They just take my breath away...

That looks really good, some nitpicking anyway:
- the sun looks fairly dark for such a clear sky.
- the water usually should not be brighter than the sky, in megapov make
sure you have conserve_energy specified in the finish.
- the boat looks nice, but the parts lit by the sun should be brighter
than the rest, right now it looks totally uniform.

Very nice indeed. The water needs fixed, though. I live a couple miles from
Lake Erie and visit quite often. The water, when there aren't waves coming
from offshore, is almost perfectly flat. When there are waves, they aren't
small isolated bumps as in this picture. They come in in long, angled,
ripples - with the water you've created riding on top of them. About 100
feet off-shore, all along the lake, the water becomes signifigantly darker.
Another thing, Lake Eries has TONS of algae growing in it near the shore.
It's almost like an open netting of algae, with chunks that float to the
top. Also, contrary to popular beleif, Lake Erie is a pristine blue
now-a-days; wherever sunlight hits it. The color of the water in this
picture is a bit too drab to be Lake Erie.
Just some thoughts from a "Lake Erie" resident. :)
Excellent artistic and technical quality in this pic. The "authenticity" (if
that even matters to you) is off as far as the water is concerned. :)
