Hi,
This is my attempt at modelling a Wimshurst electrostatic generator.
Comments, suggestions for improvements would be welcome. I'm still not
happy about the texture on the "petals", but I'm not quite sure what to
do with them. The machine was modelled in Moray.
Hopefully I'll post an image of the machine sparking soon, though it's
going to take about 14 hours to render...

This looks very promising! I have the impression that the Leyden Flasks
could be a bit larger: that would make the sparks that much larger too.

I love the modelling and texturing. For the sparking version
you'll need motionblur too:-)

I love the wood textures, perfectly matched with the brass. I would perhaps
rotate the front 2 screw heads slighly to give them a more random
appearance, wooden knob on the handle, as it looks so polished (like a
display piece) how about a small plaque on the base (or the central
support).

Very good! I really like your wood textures - any chance of posting the
source for them?

Reminds me of my days let loose in the physics lab in school.
Centuries ago :) I like the woodwork and the detail, but can't
remember what the petals should look like. Pic is a bit dark on my
monitor but no other complaints - well - the bench top looks beaut but
would expect a few dents and burns on it.

beautiful work
that may be the most convincing table top I have seen yet

Maybe you could add reflection_exponent 0.7 or so to finish statement for the wheels
metal petals.
Also some charring along the contact point by using a texture map having the wood or
onion or
spherical pattern; wood pattern can use turbulence best.
It looks like diffuse is too high. And I am puzzling over the reflection of the stand
because it's
so narrow (in the petals).

The quality of the render is excellent so that's not surprising.

I agree with everyone else the wood textures are just superb!
