Well, I got the idea from illusionworks.com and I just had to try it.
What do you think? Is it more confusing that it's 4x4 and 3x3 at the
same time or that it eternally de/ascends? Is it worth developing into
a scene?
My other question is this. Is there any way to 'fake' perspective? Can
you map a texture so that it decreases in size with distance? I can't
take much more of this orthographic stuff...

Thanks. Seriously, take a look at illusionworks.com. Under "impossible
staircase", it has a couple drawings and a great sketch showing how it's done.
It's actually quite simple.

IMO it looks good as it is, but adding some more absurdities could be
interesting of course.
I must admit i don't know how it works, could you post the geometry?

You can use a gradient pattern with a texture map and a lot of differently
scaled textures. Another possibility would ba a megapov displace warp.

Please don't post images like this on a Friday. It's been a hard week.
Any chance of an animated rotating version? (w/o radiosity unless you're feeling
maschocistic).
BTW Bravo.

I remember seeing more complex version of this made in pov.
There is also audio version of the impossible staircase:

Cool. The illusionworks website talked about this but it was in some
format that I didn't have the plugin for. It said that the pitch is
played in multiple octaves at the same time. The intensity of the pitch
in each octave is fit to a bell curve so each tone fades in, then out.
Thanks!

I made the sample with AudioMulch Risset Tone Generator. It also has
Risset Filter which has a filter bank instead of oscillator bank.

Thanks. It's on p.b.a. (with faked radiosity in the beginning ;) ).
Maschocistic? Websters is as puzzled as I am.

Really very shocking! I must have seen somewhere someplace how it works:
some kind of overlapping partial images ?
Do you know M.C. Escher's graphical work? Famous 'Waterfall' perpetuum
mobile type? Now if you could animate THAT, that would really be
astounding :-)
