I remember seeing more complex version of this made in pov.

There is also audio version of the impossible staircase:

Cool. The illusionworks website talked about this but it was in some
format that I didn't have the plugin for. It said that the pitch is
played in multiple octaves at the same time. The intensity of the pitch
in each octave is fit to a bell curve so each tone fades in, then out.
Thanks!

I made the sample with AudioMulch Risset Tone Generator. It also has
Risset Filter which has a filter bank instead of oscillator bank.

Thanks. It's on p.b.a. (with faked radiosity in the beginning ;) ).

Really very shocking! I must have seen somewhere someplace how it works:
some kind of overlapping partial images ?

Do you know M.C. Escher's graphical work? Famous 'Waterfall' perpetuum
mobile type? Now if you could animate THAT, that would really be
astounding :-)

Ah!! Much appreciated. Sweet.

BTW any chance of posting either the code or putting a larger version on the
web - I've a hankering for a new desktop...

Should have been masochistic:

1 a form of (esp. sexual) perversion characterized by gratification derived
from one's own pain or humiliation (cf. SADISM).
2 colloq. the enjoyment of what appears to be painful or tiresome.

and I was thinking of the second sense...

I prefer - schadenfreude \SHAH-dun-froy-duh\
: enjoyment obtained from the troubles of others

I think it was an IRTC entry by Sonya Roberts (BIG Maybe).

Aha, I found it. It still baffles me after staring at this picture for a few
minutes how he managed to put it in perspective. Oh well, I guess that's the
advantage of two dimensional drawings versus three dimensional scenes.
