Could anyone come close with POV?

I can!!! Unless of course I have to prove it ;)

But seriously, I suspect that someone can (not myself though). It seems like
the hardest part (besides not going insane from CSG) would be the glow-like
blur on the bottom left of the image on the watch band. But maybe a
combination of good focal blur and a light shining/bright object reflecting
on that part would simulate it sufficiently.

I don't understand where the sharp lines and angles come from on the white
part on the left of the watches face. It looks fake given what i assume the
curvature of the glass to be.

Sure.

As far as the watch model goes, I've seen plenty around here, past and
present, that are around this "quality." Anyone who has a pre-existing
model could easily put together a mock room, textured with some somber
tones, throw in an area light and play around with focal blur settings.

The real trick behind this image are really three things; texture,
atmosphere, and composition.

Yes, in fact I believe that the most recent version of MegaPov could put
this image to shame. It is very nice, mind you, but I have seen just as nice
an effort from Pov artists.
