This got a lot of re-working and could still use some changes but I gave up.
It uses photons and radiosity to get some nice effects around the glasses
but the ashtray is a little bright looking. I rendered this in 10240 x 7680
size which took 5 months to complete. (My wife wanted a large poster so I
said sure!) Allowing it to render that long was a real pain since I have to
use the same computer for other stuff. It wasn't turned off but allowed to
go night and day. Good or bad after that long you can really get tired of
the same image.

The things people do when on their significant other's request :))

Anyway, it is a really stunning image! The ash looks very similar to
some of the cigars I've smoked (ex. King Edward's) and yet different
from some others (Romeo & Juliet). It probably depends on the way the
machine stuffs the tobacco in there.

5 months... I think it's worth the wait, esp. if you forget about it
after the first few weeks :)

Very nice image! I like the antique styling and fade at the top, love the deep
deep red tone. Only problem, I would expect the cigar to have a much more matte
finish. Good detail on the ashes tho.

Now render with photons! ;)

Yes: the finish on the cigar should be different: now it has IMO a
plastic look. The scene as a whole is very impressive!

It WAS rendered with photons. That's why you can see the flares of light
near the glasses on the desktop.

I debated the cigar finish a long time. Different cigars have different
wrappers and some of mine have a shiny finish while others are matte. I
felt the wrapper does look odd through. The "leaf" just doesn't come across
right.

Very very impressive - but 5 months? wow, more patience than i have!

maybe platform independent network rendering is now one of those must have
features...

Stunning image. I like specially the book and the eyeglasses.

Five month for rendering, isn't it a record? I have never heard about
such a long rendering time.

Alberto.

There seems to be a scale problem and a camera angle problem too.
Time to re render. The cigar texture needs a bit of work, it
doesn't look dry and cracked enough.

After 5 months I think I'll pass on the re-render.

Ah. Very subtle. I was looking around the ashtray and shot glass and not seeing
caustics.

I'll take your word. Being underage one would hope I don't know too much about
cigars ;).
