A little project I've been working on. Now that SimCity3000 Unlimited
allows users to import their own buildings as images, I have met
inspiration.

This will be the Palace of Soviets, a building that was designed (sort
of.. none of the reference diagrams agree with each other), but never
actually built, due to swampy land. It would have been taller than the
Empire State (the main competition, in terms of tall buildings) and
would have featured a giant statue of Lenin or the Working Man,
depending on what diagram you look at.

More info at
http://www.cmp.ucr.edu/exhibitions/moscow/Cathedral/The_Cathedral_4.html

I rather like the look of this building. Grand and elegant, yet rather
tacky.

Pov is wonderful for this kind of project since I can set up camera
angles and lighting to be entirely consistent with those in the game.
This view is not the final isometric view, but just a work in progress
shot.

On a related note, I'm going to need a model for the top of the tower.
Any Poser users willing to donate one?

2 images attached, one of my model, one reference shot.

Beautiful. I hope we will see not only further progress but more details.

There's not much in terms of source.. everything is just boxes.

In terms of lighting, take a look at
http://simcity.ea.com/us/guide/tips/unlimited_tips/ccp4.phtml for the
official lighting and camera settings. I just replaced the two neutral
lights with area lights for the nice shadows. I may replace all the
lights for the final image.

Interesting--the square footage per floor has gotta be 10x-100x the Empire
State, no? A huge building!

Here's a quick image of how the building looks in the game.

As is, it's much smaller than it should be, both in terms of details,
and in terms of actual game scale. The maximum size of a building is
5x5, and this is the current size. However, due to the two front arms of
the building, the main body is only about 3x3 with a lot of filler on
either side.

I'm hoping to split the Palace into two sections eventually, each
represented by a seperate 5x5 block. This should allow me to have both
the scale and the details required.
