Ok, I got the looks_like bugs ironed out. I was working on making a pretty
lantern for our friend Mr. Flame, and in the development process came up
with this fairly nice looking picture.
Its rendered in MegaPOVPlus (UNIX version). There are still a few problems
with the area_light, but I can tell whats wrong.

The reflected flame is very bright in contrast to the other. When I was
trying your flame script the flame was much brighter than this one is, more
like the reflected one but not quite.
I don't think I could explain why this render is doing that except it could
be partly due to the diffuse being high in the metals finish.

The flame should be 2-3x brighter.

Well, I increased the brightness of the flame and encased it in glass.
Something doesn't look right...Maybe I should go mantel?

I like this but the flame still doesn't look biright enough. If a scene is
lit just by a couple of candle or gas flames the flames themselves are off
the brightness scale compared to the rest of the scene. Small radiating
area, inverse square falloff, you know.
