Aha. I was trying thousands of boxes.  Didn't think immediately of meshes.
So how many "meshed" boxes in this scene?

        I made one mesh of 48 times 48 boxes, using a macro to
build the boxes out of triangles.  This mesh is then repeated
in a 15x15 grid.  Each copy is randomly rotated to reduce
the appearance of tiling.
        Umm, so that would be 48 x 48 x 15 x 15 boxes.
        This is the same way that Gilles makes grass, BTW.
        I till post code on povray.text.scene-files, subject
"cells_02.pov".
