Hi All,

This is my first post in quite a while, so I feel kind of left out and
out-classed as it seems the entire news-group has surpassed me. Anyway, I
decided to restart my brain's POV-lobe and attempt some texturing and a fair
amount of realism in the image.

This is my attempt at redecorating my mom's kitchen for her (get these
images to do double-duty). The scale is accurate. The stone texture is
generated from one of the POV standard stones, but with a bump-map I grabbed
from www.thesimsresource.com and overlayed with a "dust" texture to break it
up a little. The floor was grabbed at the same place. The wallpaper she
picked from a wall and flooring website, it too has the dust applied to it.

The lighting design, which is not evident yet (but it is present), consists
of five variable track lights and three fixed position "sphere" lamps. I did
lighting design for live theatre for five years, so I attempted to model the
behavior of the light and spill as accurately as I could and am very pleased
with the results thus far.

If many of you think that the JPEG compression is too high (trying to
conserve space on the news server), I will upload a nice PNG or something to
a website.

Applause and praise is preferred, but I always need a lot of really nasty
muckery to get me ticked off enough to become motivated and angry.

Very nice. Did you use radiosity? I ask this because it dosn't look like
the sun light coming in the window is causing any increase in the
ambiant light, especialy where it hits the cabinets and floor.

Love the Lighting but PLEASE LOSE THE WALLPAPER!!!!   it looks like it came from
the Salvation army or Goodwill!  the wood is great but i would vary the grain
direction on the cabinets.  the floor, lighting(as previously said) and the
stove are great...

I used radiosity in this (MegaPov, default settings), and was also very
disappointed at the "quality" of the radiosity. I guess it depends on your
stand-point. Techno-Purists would argue that the accurate radiosity solution
is the best way to do it, whereas Artists would argue that the best looking
result is the best way to do it. In this case, I would go with the
artists... Let the colors bleed and the saturation abound! I will pump up
the brightness on the radiosity and see what happens.

That's the spirit :) I see no reason letting yourself get bogged down
with technicalities when it is the final results that really count.

Hehehe... I hate the wallpaper, too. She's really into pastels and things. I
think I will over-rule her and show her what other patterns and wall types
are available.

I was worried about the cabinets and figured no would notice... Should have
known better. :) Those are generated from a macro I wrote, so those
repeating patterns are inevitable. I will re-work the macro so they aren't
duplicated. Thanks on the stove. I spent a few days modelling it and working
out the textures. It even has an engraved logo on the display, but most of
the detail is not visible from this vantage point.

check out experiments performed with radiosity lately.  most people have
posted the source or at least their settings along with their images or
in the files newsgroups.

This looks good, and to scale.  In terms of kitchen design, I'd say it's
quite small so you might want lighter colours on the floor ortherwise
it'll always seem dark.  Also a nice touch would be a small strip light
just beneath the wall unit at the back, because the way that it is all
the light will be coming from behind you when you're working on that 
surface.

I like the sloped ceiling and the wood and stone hues, it gives the room a neat
atmosphere.
Ditch the wallpaper. It contrasts to much with the other finishes. Also, a bit
lighter colors would give the illusion of a bigger room.

Yeah, I got rid of the wallpaper in the latest render. I also re-did the
stone using an iso-surface. I'll be posting a 320x200 whenever it
finishes... The iso and heavy rad are really sucking away my CPU. I think
I'm going to go for optic realism with this image. I've slowly been adding
tiny details here and there trying to perfect each surface as I go along.

P.S. - I visited your web site but was frightened away by the giant
eye-ball. Very effective eye-ball. :)
