Hi  guys. Its been too long since I did anything with pov-ray, many many
months. If you look way way down in this newsgroup you will see that I
used to be a regular poster but I got busy with other things and have
been neglecting my pov-ray work:-). Well after seeing some of the
amazing work being done, mainly Gilles Tran's city image, I decided I
needed to get back into this. Also we recently got a fish tank which I
have been thinking would make a nice image. Anyway here is my foray back
into the pov world.

Hmm on second look at the image after posting it, it seems a little dark,
though it is a night time scene. It looks better if you save the file and view
it full screen.

Some suggestions... Fish tanks are not one solid piece. They're made of 5
sheets of glass (the kind that looks clear but has a green tint along the
edges). You need to show those green adges at the corners. Most large fish
tanks use an under-gravel filtration system which has towers rising up in
the back corners. Air bubbles rise up out of them fed from the air stones
inside the towers. This, along with possibly a waterfall filter, would
turbulate the water surface.

The lighting is good, but seems to be back in the far corner, rather than
stretching across the length of the tank.

Yes I noticed all the things you said and I might do another rendering soon.
My fish tank, despite its medium to large size, 33 Gal, does not use an
undergravel filter but instead uses and AquaClear filter, this is the
waterfall you were mentioning. I don't think I will render this because A you
can't see it from this vantage point and B I like the reflection at the
surface of the water the way it is. As for the tank being made of 5 sheets of
glass, I know this and thought about doing it that way but I went for a simple
box differenced box instead, I might try the 5 plates and see how it looks.

Looks nice... The carpet is... Well at first glance it looked good but
further study and it looks like vinyl... Maybe a deeper and smaller scale
normal... I think the bottom of the fish tank looks more like it could be
converted from grass to carpet nap...? The bottom of the fish tank looks
empty...? Maybe a little green fishey net... I like the plant and what i can
see of the hardwood floor... The banister too of course... =|

I need to get back into rendering again too after taking a break of sorts.
I've also been really getting into fish tanks, specifically reefs.

Your image is really nice.  The glass looks a bit thicker than would be needed
for a tank that size and as David mentioned it should have a tint to it.  Not
even green really, as good quality glass has a faint blue tint.  Something
like rgbf <.8, .95, 1, .8> and fade_distance and fade_power should do it.

I also like the rest of the interior view and can't help thinking that
radiosity would add a new dimension to it.  Turning off all ambience and using
radiosity in MegaPOV would do wonders I bet.

This looks great, very detailed.  The few changes I'd make are:
Make the carpet on the stairs a bit more different to the colour
of the paintwork (spindals and banister), the fish look a bit too
solid, and the sand at the very bottom of the tank is again too
similar to the paintwork of the table that it's standing on.

I like the plant.
