I see three red sections on the left side of the nose and only two on the right
side. Only a pigment structure, not that important, I only seem to like the
right side more :-)

Originally it was just one red band on both sides, I think. But time left
its marks...

Very impressing work, Ryan! The textures made it perfect. Do you plan to
write a "The making of ..."?

Very nice. Great details and textures.

You should send it to

Very nice!
Wait a minute...
This is Red 5, Luke Skywalker's X-Wing...
But the textures aren't correct for this X-Wing...
And, ...
Covered in dust?

i've got that pic. i know there are a lot of small details to finish
(that's why i'm taking a break from this model). what you may not know
is that this model was made with the intension of making a completely
random fleet. the number of stripes on the wings, the squad color and
the rest of the textures can be different from ship to ship. by the
way, the full size xwing doesn't look the same as the model anyway! so
if ilm can be inconsistent, so can i.:-)

Well, it's a classic, isn't it :-)

Yes, but I meant the red part is different.

Like I said before: you're modelling-job is brilliant!

I didn't know that, but it's quite obvious...

Hmmm.. Didn't know that. And I just watched TESB.

Where did you get a picture of a "real" Red 5 xwing ?

Oh you mean from the movie, right ?

:)

Hello Ryan,

I would just like to say how TRULY amazed I am by the quality of your
XWing work! The model.. The textures.. Everything! It's great, realistic
and detailed! Surely this has taken you a long time.. Well, much praise
to you!! :o)

Did you do it entirely with Pov or ... you mention something with Moray?
I never found Moray to be so useful, I'm sorry.. The same with other
modelers I've tried.. Is it a matter of practice? I prefer hand-coding.

Hugo

i haven't been checking my older posts, so i almost missed your
message. i would've expected you to post in one of my more recent
threads. anyway, thank you for your comments. i think i have a talent
for this modelling and raytracing thing, but as i only started this year
and the xwing is my only my third model (after a telescope and a desk),
i wish i had the experience of a gilles tran or a h.e. day.

i modelled in moray almost exclusively. i used the plastic model kit
and a dial calipers as referrence along with countless photos. i also
used spatch for the fuselage converted to a mesh. i'm 98% done with the
model. r2d2 is in the works, and i need to detail the underside of the
fuselage. using moray did take a little bit of practice, but after the
learning curve, has saved more time than you can imagine. i wouldn't
try to place 1300+ objects by hand in pov. final and milestone posts
are always done from within megapov since i do use some features
unavailable in moray. and by the way, it did take a long time (over 4
months).

p.s. to those sitting on the fence about whether to use moray, or to
those who have tried it in the past, but it has been a while, try V3.3
when it comes out. one feature in particular is very exciting. sorry i
can't tell you what it is. just wait and see.
