Could the crystal's faces be made imperfectly like the ones in the picture
that I scanned in?  The faces at the tip are of different sizes.  The bottom
has a milky color.  The tip is a little rounded.

Ah, yours looks like it has been in a creek or a wash for a length of time. :)
The top faces on mine are imperfect, that is they are all different sizes. I
choose how different the sizes are from one-another. As for the rounded tip on
yours, it's that way because it has been damaged (as if you didn't know :).
That damaged tip could be accomplished by intersecting the crystal with another
noise3d isosurface. I tried to get the milky color to be as bright as yours
(and many of the ones I have), but the media just wouldn't brighten up. It
would get brighter near the top, but darker when it cast a shadow in itself.

Is it scattering media you're using? If so, did you try lowering
extinction?

difficult to fix. If the enclosing object uses transmit rather than filter for
transparency, then the media casts no shadows. For example:

 object{MyObject pigment{rgbt 1.0} interior{media{MyMedia}}} //no shadows
 object{MyObject pigment{rgbf 1.0} interior{media{MyMedia}}} //shadows

Thanks! I'll try lowering extinction, and that should give me some beautiful
'cloud' inclusions.

Thanks, Brendan, but Samuel said the media casts a shadow on itself so
the container's transparency type is not the matter here. Unless...
unless you mean to give it filter *and* a little transmt? Is that what
you have in mind? I haven't tried it, it might just work.

I did several images once of clusters of quartz crystals with gold embedded in
the matrix.  Fun stuff!
