hmmm, is it a normal or just a slightly turbulated(?) texture like
marble or something?

it's especially convincing for a pic like this.

Very neat picture.
Maybe this is what grows in sand dunes and has a very short life-cycle.

Wow! Very cool! And funny!

I imagine the source is actually quite short; an isosurface for the dunes
and a trace-part that places those ... chinese madmen. And still so
artistically impressive! I mean, it's a simple, yet original concept. One
can stare at this image and wonder such things as:

What are they thinking?
What are they looking at?
How did they get there? Why?
Where is it?

I really like images with messages like this. :-)

Can I have a guess at the sand? An isosurface with e.g. a plane as a base
function, then a largely scaled, slightly turbulenced marble pigment
function added, and then yet a marble added with different orientation
and/or turbulence?

Simen.

I'm using pattern image. It is faster to work with than isosurfaces and I
have more freedom with loops and such. Basically it's a bunch of sylindrical
patterns + a spiral for the hf and a marble bump_map.

I've uploaded the source in the binary group. It's probably bigger than you
thought, actually than I thought too.. It was originally 5 different files.

Pac Men plotting revenge against Tetris?

Fun image, the grins are a little unnerving, tho.

Awsome image. The smilies are cool but you do wonder what they are so happy
about. This image made me chuckle.
