I chop and change. Short replies I generally put the quote at the end.
Longer replies I quote at the beginning. I'm certainly not consistent or
particularily logical about it. Is there a standard netiquette?

I switch it around on rare occasions and do as you said here.

However, for the most part I usually let the quote go afterward of anything
I say unless it seems I need to splice into the previous message someplace
in the middle.
I just like seeing the next reply first because I tend to read almost everything
and so then I tend to recognize the quoted part anyway.
Although this isn't going to work out as well for forgotten posts I can still just
reread whatever was quoted after getting the idea of the follow-up.
Of course it must be such a personal preference I can't see anyone adhering
to a certain "netiquette" rule regarding this, which I think I've seen remarked
by others before too.

yes, it is a standard nettiquette for it, see how silly my reply to your
post looks?

I have seen a general consensus favoring a reply after the quoted text.
It's even better if you only include the relevant portion of the quoted
text you are replying to (Just as my reply is structured). This way it
kind of reads an actual conversation.

My major complaint with that way has always been how it necessitates
paging down to see the reply on messages over a window-page in length.
I'm not saying the below-quote method is wrong, it's just about personal
preferences.
Even more so I know a reply can never be mistaken for anything else if placed
before the quoted message. If at the end it always seems to mix in with signatures.

Checking the group I'm in just now, going way OT :-) unless this is surgery on
message posts.

That is why when replying I always take a few moments to edit out things
like sigs and signoff messages. That too is part of the quoting netiquette.
