I used the MegaPatch on this rendering. There is blinn highlighting on the
water and aircraft canopy, motion blur on the prop (not just a texture
anymore) and the spinner. This is a *long* ways from looking realistic (the
plane), but it sure is coming along!

Comments welcome and encouraged.

Nice sky.
Didn't have patience to wait to see the rest. System is slow today.........

The plane is really coming along nicely. The sky.... While I waited for
this monster to download I spent a lot of time looking at the sky and
trying to figure out what bothered me about it. I think the thing that
bothered me the most is that the light source (moon ?) looks like it
is inside the earths atmosphere rather than outside of it. The yellow
coloration of the clouds doesn't really seem to fit in well either.
I would like to see them a little whiter in color. The water is nearly
black with a reflection of the light but the sky is too bright for this
to look real. No wait. What I really hate about this is how well you
modelled the airplane. I'm sorry but no one is that good :)

My apologies for the size. I thought it would be better received. :(

You are right, of course, Ken. The clouds are a simple texture applied to a
cylinder. The (moon?) ;) object was supposed to be a sun. It is inside of a
sky_sphere, which has all of the effects you noticed. I can fix that, I
think.

Controlling the light in this image is really bugging me :)

The model still has a few problems ;) Feel better? :)

The motion blur looks pretty cool, but the sky looks unrealistic. I
don't understand if you were trying to render a moonlit scene or a
sunlit scene. The yellow in the sky, and on the horizon looks out of
place entirely. Sunlight and moonlight don't look so yellow, unless
the orb in question is near the horizon, and shining obliquely through
the thicker layer of atmosphere.

The land on the horizon is so nearly flat, but not quite, and in such
deep shadow, that the water appears to be "bent" near the horizon. I
first thought this was a scene over an ocean, until I cranked up my
gamma to reveal the land on the horizon. If you want to keep the land
on the horizon, you might want to make the terrain a bit more uneven
to make it more obvious that we are looking at land and not water on
the horizon.

Speaking of gamma, was this done on a PC, MAC, or what? I'm not sure
I'm viewing this at the brightness you intended.

My last suggestion is to use a better JPEG compression setting. Your
file is about 333K in size, but I was able to resave it using LViewPro
and the file size shrank to a measley 57K. Any difference in quality
is unnoticeable, but the download time would certainly have been much
shorter.

Keep working on this, don't let me discourage you. I like the plane,
but experiment with the sky some, and next time *please* compress the
JPEG a bit more.

Later,
Glen Berry

The news server has been hanging a lot lately. Not really your fault.

Yep! Much better :~)

System is faster today. Looks pretty cool.

Coming along very nicely, the motion blur on the prop is great.
Either it's a bit dark or it could do with some area lights to make
the land that incy bit more noticable.

I just tried gamma correction and now think I see what you're
seeing. The land is visible now and the plane looks a bit too
bright, like you say the light is going to be real tricky to
controle here.

Cool! I really like it. If you could use a paint program (Paint shop Pro
Etc.) and paint the whole tail end Red, take out the blue in the front,
and make the guy inside Black, then it could be one of the Tuskkee(?)
Airmen!
