Not a pretty picture and it proves I know next to nothing about swords
but this was just an experiment to see how heightfields could be used
for engravings.
These are two copies of two copies of a heightfield using waterlevel to
clip.

Not bad, artistically speaking. The real challenge is to get it to look
"painted" as well, but I don't know if swords were ever engraved with color

And hf's are so much faster than text objects, too!

Hope you don't hate me for saying this... they seem to be made of chalk.
About the engraving stuff, it wouldn't be easy to get a real good look.
'normal' can't do well for all things and any CSG is still going to be difficult
to get placed right. A height field is the best thing I can think of if you use
a 256 color one without smoothing maybe, you know, so you get those contour
lines on purpose. Just not sure how you'd go about getting the overall blade
shape in combination with that unless done by CSG and then it wouldn't be easy
again.
Might be plausible to use both a normal bump map though if you also apply a
semi-transparent image map of the same source into the same place. Kind of
enhance the effect maybe.

Nope. The first material that comes into my mind when I think of swords
in real life is plastic, as in the toy swords we used to wave around and
that would bend in very unrealistic ways. This might as well have been
plastic. That was not really the point of this pic. I just threw it
together to see if you could decorate (for instance) the blade of a
sword with heightfields.
There's thread about this in the advanced users group (what am _I_ doing
there...) and I got the idea that with a heightfield you could do all
sorts of cute things in a very simple direct way. It turned out that the
blade itself was also quite easy to model with this, although I suspect
there could be all sorts of things wrong with it as it is now but that's
just because I don't really know what I'm doing.
Say, wouldn't it be nice to have (yet) another newsgroup, something like
povray.ignorant.retards? ;)

It is no longer politicaly correct to say ignorant retards. To be PC about
it the group should be named povray.intellectualy.challenged.

Nah, no new group needed. There's the povray.newusers already.
Hope I didn't just say something wrong.

Politics change, and so do PC phrases. Just be polite
and hope for the best.

My mother was a school teacher in the late 60's through the seventies.
In the earlier years they had a special ed class for retarded children.
Then sometime around '68 or '69 a memorandum came down from the states
department of education that declared that these children were no longer
to be referred to as retarded as it was considered a derogatory label.
They were to be referred to in the school system as the academically
challenged. The programs that they attended were to be called special
education programs as opposed to classes for the retarded.

You can change the label on the package but the contents are the same
so you are right be polite.
