I'd appreciate your comments and any help you could give me with the sand
texture. The sand is two differenced isosurfaces and the texture a simple
pigment isosurface.

The "transition" from sand to water is very sharp. Maybe add the pigment
function to the two sand functions to create real bumps.
The (wet)sand near the water should be darker than the (dry)sand further
away.
Are there any superlatives left for your work?

Nice, (no, very good), but something seems to be wrong with scale. I
can't say, what exactly, perhaps hills are too small or stones and sky
texture (very nice, btw) too big.
Light seems to be too sharp, but I assume that it is just test
rendering, so I expect improvement here.

Did you use a fairly large viewing angle? This could cause a slightly
unnatural look of the image, perhaps.
This is just my layman's remark: I couldn't make anything like this at all,
for a long time!

You're building up quite a reportoire of good looking landscapes!

I have difficulties believing that water can be trapped in pools if this
is sand. Maybe you're better off with weather polished granite? But if
you're going for sand, I'd say stick with the pigment and get the ground
more flat.

Those stones look like huge drops of tar with moss on. Too much diffuse?
Actually they look reflective, but I guess me eyes are pulling me leg.
Spatch or blobs?

Also I would expect to see the bottom of those closest pools.

Finally.. does this take days to render?

sig.

I'm a sucker for clouds and I have to say these clouds really have strength.
The huge(?) angle of the camera also enhances the effect.
Nice

Your getting quite good with those landscapes. What tools/techniques do you
use? (In brief I mean)

Mick, you're doing it again! Good job! I have no constructive criticism for
you, sorry.

If you could get contouring around those rocks and perhaps the puddles too
it would certainly break up the oneness it now has. Only chance of that I
can think of is a overhead orthographic camera to plot out a heightfield
someway. Oh, wait this is all isosurface huh.
At least you might have a chance with the wet sand bordered puddles as was
already suggested with a gradient y in layered texture, as long as those are
all the same y plane anyway.
Guess you spelled estuary wrong, I wasn't suere at first what it was meant
to denote until I saw the picture.

Leveller for a good HF, leveller will also give you all the height points on
the HF which is useful for placing rocks etc. Then really it's just color
and texture. Having spent a good part of my life mountaineering helps.
