If you could get contouring around those rocks and perhaps the puddles too
it would certainly break up the oneness it now has.  Only chance of that I
can think of is a overhead orthographic camera to plot out a heightfield
someway.  Oh, wait this is all isosurface huh.
At least you might have a chance with the wet sand bordered puddles as was
already suggested with a gradient y in layered texture, as long as those are
all the same y plane anyway.
Guess you spelled estuary wrong, I wasn't suere at first what it was meant
to denote until I saw the picture.
