Greetings,

I went looking for a macro today that I saw posted about three weeks
ago. Which one is unimportant to his message. I looked in the scene
files and the utilities groups and could not find it. I then figured,
ok, it might have been in the .general group. Nope no way ! I could not
find it anywhere. Out of desperation I started going through this group
and after 25 min spent waiting for images to load and reading through
a ton of postings and their related replies I finally found it.

Why do I bother to bring my problem to your attention ?

That is easy to answer !

If the macro had been posted to the correct group it would have been
easier to find. I admit that I am just as guilty as the next person
about posting my Pov script in here as the next person but we really
should act as group and start putting this kind of material where it
belongs and not in this group. There are some invaluable resources
being wasted because of the location they are posted to are not where
one would expect to find it. Further more when posted in here it is
almost without fail buried one or two levels deep with no identifier
in the heading to say that the source is there for those who want it.

So how about it people. Let stop supplying the source for our scenes
files here and take it to the scene files group where it belongs. It
would certainly help me and it just might help you sometime in the
future as well. It would also make it easier for someone at a later
time to compile a list of available material so people don't have
toi reinvent the wheel each time a question is asked about how do
I do this or that. I don't know of anyone that would make such a list
and you probably don't either but you never know for sure do you.

Thank you for taking the time to read this and I appreciate those
who will take it to heart this minor little change in behaviour that
I am asking for. I think it is a fair and reasonable request to make
and it is in keeping with the idea of having seperate groups for the
content they contain.

Regards,

Well said!

Of course, the problem is, it ain't gonna happen, in
my opinion.

It would be great if people would follow common sense
and post in the appropriate newsgroup, but since these
groups are unmoderated some people will post where
they want to.

i.e. This are unmoderated newsgroups, so I can do
whatever I want.

Which leads to other people thinking they can do the
same..

i.e. if one person doesn't follow the rules why should I
or anyone else?

What would be great would be if there were some
povray.moderated newsgroups, but that would be a
huge time commitment for the moderators (if done
properly)

I think that most people do a good job here about posting
where they should, but there is room for improvement from
everyone of us. Let's take Ken's advice to heart and try to
do better.

B. Katt, switching back to lurk mode.

Post it in the right group, dangit :)

Just kidding. I think this is well said. People need to PAY ATTENTION TO
GROUP NAMES. (sorry for the caps, trying to prove a point)

I'm sick of people putting images in the scene-files and animations in the
images area and vice-versa. Even if I first posted a day or two ago, I've
been checking out these groups consistently for a few months. I've seen too
much of this incorrect-group posting.

Oh well. . .can't really do anything about it. Too bad this group isn't
moderated. :P

Just be sure you don't cross post the scene and image info.

A valid point, and well made.

I must confess to performing the heinous action described by Ken,
posting source as a reply to a reply to an image of mine.

The problem, I guess, is that someone sees an image, says "Hey, that's
nice. Can I have the source?" And of course we say "Sure! Here it is,
enjoy!" being such nice, well balanced individuals that we are, thrilled
that someone thinks our code is worth seeing, eager to spread good will
and intellectual understanding ( ... etc, etc ... ;-).

So maybe now that the point has been brought up we can remember to pause
before hitting the send key, to think whether it should be going to that
particular news group or whether a quick "Sure! I'll post it to ..."
would be a better reply.

Well, that's enough filosifising from me for this week :-)
