OK, so I grabbed Ken's Media Candle code and started playing with it.
I've discovered a fewthings. First, putting media in a real scene with
lights and stuff makes media washout, second, media on a rotational
sweep doesn't look right at all, media in a sphere works fine, but in a
CSG of 2 spheres and a cone it's not the same either. So, heres my
dragon staring at media candle in perplexity wondering what the hell it
all means. (i rather like my candle though)

ok, tweaked it a bit by duplicating the flame 2x andscaling to fit
inside each instance of flame. i'm much happier.
now i'm going to fix the texture on the dragon and maybe make a real
picture.

The washout may be caused by a too low / nonexistent absorption in the
media. In 90% of cases, you have to use some absorption along with emission.
The candles look good, but I guess without translucency... Ah well, I will
say no more until I can show off my translucent candle. Lance's is a good
example, but that's MAX.

BTW, your dragon would deserve a name by now, don't you think? :)

Not right now. Just one thing - the absorption colour should, in general, be
the opposite of the emission colour (in hue)
