Gee, I was hoping for some kind of comments even if they're bad. Is this
reasonable work? Does the community find it interesting? What could I do to
make it better? Am I wasting my time and wasting news group storage space?

?

I'm sorry Jim. I was trying to relate the image to the title
and found myself at a loss for comments. Strange huh ?

I'm familiar with the work you do, mostly in the realm of chemisty,
and find this a departure from your usual stuff. Is this really
an accurate model of silicon ? The phong highlights seem a little
over done but the shape is interesting. Maybe it was the starscape
in the background that was throwing me off.

What is depicted in the foreground is the electrostatic potential field
around a 15 member cluster of Silicon atoms (blue is a negatively charged
region, red is positive). Given today's increasing emphasis on 'organic'
shapes for spacecraft (a la Babylon 5) It struck me that this view of the
silicon cluster would be representative of that and, if depicted against a
starfield background (actually a photo), it could be viewed as one element
of a gathering of silicate life forms in their starships.

Weird, eh?

Jim,
I think your image is great! I like the shape, the texture and the
setting. I guessed it must represent some sort of force field around
silicon atoms, but as an abstract it still has something going for it.
One question, should the two small mid-scene negative blobs be
detached quite so far? And is it possible to have an asymmetrical
collection of silicon atoms? After looking at it for a while, the
absolute symmetry is rather disturbing.

Comments coming up !

Well... I don't know what it is(well...I do, I read the followups.)
But, I have no idea if it looks as it should or anything,it's a nice image, my
opinion.

Personally, I would have textured the potential field differently, but how
you managed what you have is impressive enough! :)

Oh -- I thought at first it was "Silicone Gathering" .... :)

Seriously, it's interesting, but despite being a big fan of the material,
I'm afraid I didn't recognize initially.

I actually did a similar image myself awhile back, of a more macroscopic
body :
