A little something I've been playing around with the last few nights...
A solar sail ship flys past the camera. I'm basing the ship loosely on
the tropical lionfish.When I get a bit more done, I'll post some WIP
images in p.b.i.
I really had to kill the AVI settings to get this to a reasonable size.
Can anyone offer some tips?

Looks good, although way too small :-) Maybe make the background less intensive,
so the ship is coming out better.

Errr... Try using mpeg?
Using a less busy background might help.
But I like it nonetheless.

shouldn't iy have like a laser beam pushing it along? - there was a cartoon
i saw years ago with this..

can you say DivX;-) - i didnt do my recent anims in it for nothing you

Solar sails are supposed to operate by using the solar wind, no laser is
needed, and you would need an extremely powerful laser to have any
effect anyway. I have read about another laser propulsion technology
being developed, it uses a very powerful ground laser and a disk-shaped
projectile. However, it relies on an atmosphere, and would be pretty
much useless in space.

Only one that I know with certainty and that is to use frame to frame
consistency, that is to say, very little change between each. Not exactly
going to help you there because of the panning camera but if you were to
move along with the sail at a slower speed and just let it pass without
turning around that should improve file size somewhat.
The sail is neat but it's illuminated on both sides nearly the same, no
great contrasting difference anyway. Since that's how it works that might
be something to consider.
I saw Tron again not very long ago and this reminded me of the thing that
traveled on a beam of energy, no idea what it's called.

I read about quite a few different propulsion methods a while back in Robert
L. Forward's book "Indistinguishable From Magic". In it, he talks about
some different areas of possible future technology which, if viewed by us
today, would be inidistinguishable from magic. Then he gives short stories
which use some of these technologies. I found it pretty interesting.

of course!, but dont forget, this was a cartoon a saw when i was very small,
and it looked really cool, and thats what were after here most of the time -
if i remember rightly the laser hit the back of the hull, and then lit the
sails up, with a few other beams here and there for effect..- as i say
looked cool :)
i have seen (on disc chan) that laser propulsion thing you mention, its a
left over starwars laser blasting (short pulses) the underside of what looks
like an over expensive spinning top.

Actually, the description I saw was that it looked like an aluminum
pie-pan.

The one I say a TV demonstration of looked like an expensive spinning
top. Two against one, you lose. :)
