Hi.
I ran into a problem creating an animation with CMPEG. I rendered 500
frames, 320x240, and used CMPEG to create an MPEG movie. Unfortunately
it came out to be 11 Meg). The other problem is that it doesn't play on
my WIN98 (233 Pentium, 160Meg memory) system. Even my 433 WinNT system
exhibits strange symptoms while running it. The slide bar on Windows
Media Player doesn't move while it plays, and, while it reaches the last
frame and stops, the WMP doesn't seem to realize it finished. The
"Stop" button is still displayed and it doesn't loop. Also, I can't use
the slide to position the movie to individual frames.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Is there any other free software besides CMPEG for creating MPEG movies?

Thanks.

(The movie is the spaceship Valley Forge from the movie "Silent Running"
passing in front of the camera. There's another movie of it and a still
picture at

Look at
http://www.tmpgenc.net
for a rather good freeware encoder. If you look on the
DIVX site, they've got links to several encoders (some
of em free, some not).

With TMPGEnc, all you do is select the first frame
for animation, set the fps, data rate etc with
settings (on the lower right edge of the window) and
then hit Start (on the upper left edge of the window),
and it'll encode. Its pretty fast and you can easily
tweak and experiment with lower data rate to save
bandwidth etc...

I use AVICreator ( http://www.bloodshed.net/avi.html )
to make .avi's from Bitmaps (uncompressed). Don't forget
to add your last frame twice (especially if your animation should loop),
cause the very last frame won't be displayed in the video afterwards.
(BTW, can anyone tell me why?)

Then I use avi2mpg1 ( http://www.mnsi.net/~jschlic1/mpeg_a.htm#avi2mpg1 )
to make my .mpg. If you use the GUI-Wrapper you need to add "" around
the filenames manually, or it will show an error message. To control filesize,
adjust the bitrate ( lower left in the gui ).

I see you have decided to join the faithful ;)

If you have not already downloaded it, make sure you get the VFAPI plugin
for png files. It is here:

Thank you. I'll try it.

I also downloaded tmpgenc, but the requirements say Pentium III - which
sort of rules out my using it for awhlie :-(

Thanks for the suggestions.
