I am happy with this animation except for one thing: When the ball is moving
across the screen, it has a double image. If you stop the action, the
individual frame is clearly defined, no double image. I have spent hours
experimenting with every variable I can find, like resolution, frame rate,
bit rate, compression rate, etc. I have tried several AVI compression
schemes, and have tried four different video editing programs. I have other
MPG animations that were done the same way as this one, and none of them
have the problem. Do any of you experts out there have any suggestions?

I am viewing it with Media Player 7 on Win 98, and I don't see a double image.
What frames is it in?

Steve,
    I would try to increase the number of frames in the animation and slow
it down a bit. Maybe even shrinking the size of the animi. I think the cause
is the large image size and the speed of the animation. You also have large
movements between frames, this makes it very jumpy, not smooth at all. Try
converting the animation to Bink by Rad Game Tools. Bink has given me better
compression and a smoother animation than MPEG.

I think I see what he is talking about.
Media Player 7 in WinME here but should be the same.  Anyway, esp. when the
ball goes past nearby, the leading and trailing edges go into a kind of
unplanned motion blur since there isn't any actually used as you can see by
freeze-framing it.
My guess is it's the decoder doing it then.  My Voodoo3 16MB video ought to be
suitable enough to prevent the effect and yet it's there.  Would not think it
to be the video card anyhow.  Refresh rate on this screen is around 80Hz.
Nothing I know to try except a different encoding but it might not solve this
for everyone's different mpeg players.

I have a suggestion for the animation, wanted or not.  Maybe use a planar image
map for the photo, putting it inside the sphere, and keep it counter-rotating
like it is now.  Just seems to me that photos of people aren't good wrapped
onto spheres.  Unless you want that funny mirror effect.

(watch... you'll end up telling me it already is done that way!)

FYI, the photo on the sphere is an actual (virtual) reflection. it is on a
plane behind the camara, facing the sphere. The closer it is positioned
behind the camara, the more distorted the image. I compromised on the
position to get the least distortion without the reflection appearing too
small.

I'm guessing that Rick thinks that motion blur will provide additional
smoothing between frames.

Motion blur is best applied through megapov.

I'm not sure that this will solve your problem, but as I can't actually
reproduce your problem, it's hard to say.

I would have thought the best solution would be to output more frames in
your original pov source - the problem seems likely to relate to a large gap
between moves.
