Yeah, SA. Not for long. Quite possibly I'll be in Colorado by April

Photon mapping simulates light refracting through transparent or
reflecting off reflective objects onto other surfaces...if you don't
have anything for them to show up on, you are just wasting time shooting
photons. All of the surfaces in this image appear to be either
transparent or reflective, with nothing for the caustics to have much of
an effect on.

It does have some effect on more complex items, such as hollow objects with
glass objects inside, doesn't it?

If there are no surfaces or media for the photons to show up on, they
will only slow things down. They behave like any other illumination.
Glass usually won't show them, and most metals will only have a slight
visible effect. If you entire scene is a complex object composed of
highly reflective metal and completely transparent glass, you will just
drive up your render time.
However, if you put that object in a box or on a plane with a mostly
non-reflective, opaque texture, or use media...

Ah, okay. Using it on timber, smoke, etc?

As far as I can tell, there is no Mac codec for it, which means I can't
play any DivX-encoded movies. There *is* a player for it...but it
requires the Mac version of Microsoft Media Player...bleh.

Guess I'll have to post links in future. One to an AVI and one to a GIF
