There isn't much for photons to do in this scene...you might as well 
turn them off and save the calculation time.

Nail on the head. Cyrix FPUs aren't the best around. From what I've read,
even when they were new they were bottom of the ladder. Strictly business
CPUs, I'm afraid. Pity I didn't know that until after we'd forked out
AU$2000 for this thing in 98. But if I can scrounge up a K6II I won't need a
new motherboard, at least

Photon mapping simulates light refracting through transparent or 
reflecting off reflective objects onto other surfaces...if you don't 
have anything for them to show up on, you are just wasting time shooting 
photons. All of the surfaces in this image appear to be either 
transparent or reflective, with nothing for the caustics to have much of 
an effect on.
