Thank you. Yes, frame rate was important to me, particularly, because eventually
I am aiming for a larger work to be written to videotape via a Pinnacle video IO
card and Adobe Premiere. I am fairly new at this animation stuff, so I am
experimenting a little (in between work on the FlightGear project
www.flightgear.org). One thing I am still trying to determine is what resolution
I need to use if I want the best rendition to video in 16:9 aspect (of course
there will be blank space above and below the picture).

Yes, there should be, and, in fact, there are, but they are badly done. There
are two main problems:
1) I used the star textures from stars.inc, and they appear to show up randomly
frame-to-frame. They are also very faint.
2) Using high compression they tend to disappear.
I will probably try and create a thousand points of light, next time ;-)

First, I used POV to create 1170 sequential images. Then, I used Dave's Targa
Animator to merge 2 adjacent files. Then, I used Dave's Targa Animator to write
the 585 POV bmp output files to compressed .jpg files. Then, I wrote an AVI file
using Intel Indeo 5.11 with Quick Compress enabled. After that, I used bbmpeg to
convert it into an mpeg1 animation.
The artifact did not appear in the original avi. which was 240x136.

Hmmmm... I'm not familiar with bbmpeg - have you tried another program to
convert the avi to an mpg? Also, by converting your bmp's to jpg's and then
to compressed avi and then ultimately to mpg you are introducing three lossy
conversions instead of just one, although it doesn't seem to be too apparent
in the final output. (For whatever that's worth...)

No.
It's more realistic to not have stars while something like the earth or moon
(or even a lit spacecraft) is in the camera's field of view. The reason
being how dim stars actually are.

Try converting it from .bmp to uncompressed AVI using Fast Movie Processor
(what I normally do). This gets rid of two steps that add artifacts to your
movie.

That sounds good to this neophyte animator. Where can I get FMP? Would then
going from AVI to mpg1 be compressible down to the point I have taken it?

In the pictures I have seen taken from space of either the earth or the moon I
cannot recall seeing many (or any) stars. I assumed they washed out in the
picture. However, I *do* remember hearing astronauts talk about seeing stars
while in space (of course they have to be able to see them for navigation if
they are forced to resort to that. It is an interesting question on what to put
into a ray-traced rendering. I wanted dimly visible starts in mine, but it
didn't end up working out very well.

just make your stars slightly larger :) (instead of making your render time
astronomical)
