High!

Does the famous-infamous ;-) 1 meg limit for animation files still
apply? If yes, what about establishing a separate binaries newsgroup for
people who are lucky enough to have DSL connections and/or wanting to
post large animations? I could imagine that many here would like to see
such a group...

See you in Khyberspace!

Why not just post a link... or develop a website for this? Its much faster
to download from websites than newsgroups as well as you don't have to worry
about attachment encoding wars... ;)

Maybe a specialized POV version of bittorent (or a bittorent-like patch for
POV-ray)? After rendering an animation or image it's hashed and shared on
the p2p network automatically.

It's not only a question of bandwidth but also of server space.
Remember that despite generosity of netplex running this server costs
money. I don't see any reason why you can't put your large animations
on a web server (either run by you, your ISP or a free webspace somewhere
).

Also note that a lot of people automatically download all postings on
this server regularly - people with dial-up connections as well as with
broadband access.

Well... I could imagine that there are people who wouldn't like
such functionality. Additionally, I think that pov should be here
to render pics, and to do THAT job well.

I understand that. But it was a nice piece of fantasy!

Nice idea...

...however... the problem is that might mean that all the really cool
animations get put on povray.big-binarys.animations, and nothing gets put on
povray.binaries.animations any more... would be a shame if animations become
purely the presurve of people with fast net connections... :-(

I agree though, it's tough trying to make stuff fit... especially since the
NNTP protocol seems to mandate ASCII-encoding all bianry attachments... I've
discovered that MPEG can be made to fit, but only with insane bitrates...
50k/sec, anyone? +^S

[This is where someone posts a message saying "what we really need is some
super-fantastic new codec that can compress anything into the size of a
peanut"... If only it were that simple! ;-)]

Thanks.
Andrew
